GeekStrike

Organised by Nanyang Technological University every year, students are required to come up with a product, any product at all, with the aim of encouraging technopreneurship. Each product is categorised into groups like automation, design and innovation etc. Judges comprising a team of professors and inventors will then evaluate the products and select the best 3 in each category. Over the years, there have been many interesting things the students came up with. This year was no exception. There were certainly no lack of weird cool inventions. Here are some of them:

V.E.D.A

Nope, this is not the supercomputer from Gundam 00, the Vehicular Emergency Distress Alarm is a device attached to your handphone that in an event of an accident, sends an SMS alerting Celestial Being the relevant authorities and giving them the exact location via GPS.

Handicap lot blocker

This invention conveniently puts up a barrier preventing inconsiderate drivers from parking there.

Bicycle Lock

This bicycle lock is almost theft-proof

This bicycle lock gives a whole new perspective on bicycle security, by locking the entire frame. The length of the lock can even be adjusted to accomodate bikes of different sizes.

Ceiling Fan Cleaner

Ceiling fans are a hassle to clean, but with the ceiling fan cleaner all you have to do is slot the fan blades in between the rollers and slide it along. The rollers can then be removed via the top part for cleaning.

Live Ring

The Live Ring uses a chemical reaction to inflate the float, similar to that of the pull-to-inflate type of life jacket.

Warning lights for zebra crossing

Sensor

A road safety device which warns motorists via the red LEDs when they are approaching a zebra crossing at night. The LEDs are activated as the motorist drives past a sensor.

Crab Tying Machine

This invention works on the principle that what a crab can’t see, it can’t attack. The plunger like thing you see in the picture is used to cover the crab’s eyes, which render it incapable of fighting back with those nasty pincers (it has to do with its psychology), allowing it to be safely wrapped up.

Baby Car Seat

The baby car seat inflates through the push of a button to the size you want and can be conveniently folded up into a regular car seat.

Compressible Rubbish Bin

As the name suggests, trash is compacted by stepping on the lever seen in the picture.

Automatic Bus Shelter

The shelter opens up when the bus door opens. Good for rainy days.

Electronic Carpark Coupon

The ECC helps you get rid of those pesky carpark coupons by deducting cash directly from your cashcard. It also comes with an LED sign to signal you the card’s status (tick means you’re fine and the exclamation mark tells you it’s time to top up).

Laptop Cooler

This laptop cooler, seen on the left, dissipates heat through conduction and convection. It may look like a simple piece of metal, but I was told that it can take away up to 75% of the heat generated.

Foldable Chair

2 of these chairs can be folded into a table. Handy for a picnic. Or chess.

Fever Regulator

The fever regulator eliminates the need to change ice towels by providing a constant flow of cool liquid through the ‘towel’.
