As in every Geeking101 article, we give you our take on the 101 ways to attain true Geekhood. This week’s episode is about Geek toys before the age of computer gaming or technology.
There was a time not so long ago when PCs were unheard of and handphones were nonexistent. The consumer tech market was woefully undeveloped. So, at that time, geeks differentiated themselves from the more ‘boring’ people by their collections. Yes, the geeks of that time were collectors. Star Wars, Star Trek, G.I Joe…and TRANSFORMERS. Those were the toys that started us on the path to geekdom.
But the Transformers were my favourite because on one hand you get an awesome car/plane/vehicle/anything-under-the-sun-thingabob, and on the other hand you get a freaking cool robot! I’ve always liked how the parts in the robots fit together to form the desired everyday object. It was fascinating. So here’s my collection. Yes it looks small…I used to have a much larger collection than this but sadly most were lost in transit when I shifted house.
As you can see the Transformers I have look quite different from the regular cartoon. That’s because most of them are from the anime version, Transformers: Victory and Transformers: Super God Masterforce. However, they’re also part of the G1 (Generation 1) continuity.
God Ginrai
No, it’s not Optimus. This is God Ginrai, the protagonist in Super God Masterforce. But he sure looks like our famous hero, and unlike Optimus, his trailer can transform into a mobile base. Neat. He is also a supporting character in the sequel Transformers: Victory.
Star Saber
Named after his namesake weapon, Star Saber is the Optimus Prime of Transformers: Victory, my favourite of the G1 series. He possesses many similar traits with Prime and is skilled in the use of his light Star Saber, which he often uses to kick his nemesis’s, Deszaras, ass. He transforms into a Starfighter and a Battleship when merged with his mobile platform. He can also combine with Victory Leo to form the insanely powerful Victory Saber.
Deszaras
The Decepticon Emperor, Deszaras, is Star Saber’s sworn enemy. I find him to be much cooler than Megatron simply because he has a lot more weapons and can transform into a griffin/dragon/El Pollo Diablo-the-giant-demon-chicken-thing which is more interesting than a boring gun. Oh, and he possesses a planet destroying space fortress which unfortunately is not included. His personal weapons include:
- a wicked looking morning star.
- a saber.
- the living-metal-destroying cannon. In other words, pewpew.
- wings which can absorb solar energy that can then be launched as blades. Referred to as his ‘Deathwing’ attack.
- the Breastforce. Yeah, you heard that right. It’s actually 2 animals concealed in his err, chest. One of them is an eagle and the other a tiger. He often deploys them to flank his enemies. Both can also transform into weapons for their master.
Victory Leo
Formerly God Ginrai, who was killed by Deszaras. He was then reformatted into the berserk-prone Victory Leo. When he goes on a rampage, nothing can stop him. Victory Leo can merge with Star Saber to form the most powerful Transformer in the series, Victory Saber (with platform shoes to boot!). Leo himself transforms into a saber-tooth tiger. It is in this form that he goes berserk.
