TVs are usually mounted on walls, so that we can sit down comfortably on our couches and munch on potato chips while watching Battlestar Galactica. Apparently, this family decided that watching TV while lying down on bed would be much more comfortable. But how do you watch TV when your head is facing towards the ceiling? Simple, mount the TV on the ceiling of course! And that’s what Patti Deni did for her son.

Using a 98 inch StarGlas60 display, an NEC video projector and Draper protection mirrors, the whole setup was mounted onto the reinforced ceiling, which had to support the combined weight of 136kg. Her son’s consoles, computer and cable box also had to be connected to it. While I can’t even begin to imagine the cost of this, the family is probably very satisfied with the whole thing.

“Because it’s so big and has such a wide viewing angle, Patty’s son wouldn’t have to lay flat on his back necessary to see the screen,” Bohner (the systems designer) explains.

Patti’s approach may have been quite…innovative, but I question the practicality of this. True, you may not have to lie down to see the screen, but there’s a reason people avoid sitting in the front row when watching movies. Only by lying down flat would you avoid the inevitable neck strain you would experience should you choose to sit. Overall, an expensive, impractical but magnificent piece of engineering.
